Power – the ignored factor
Power requirement is easily ignored in metal cutting operations and the biggest reason is that it is an INVISIBLE factor. When we carry out any machining operation; we do not look at the power withdrawn by the machine. And that’s the catch on machining cost. It’s always beneficial to any organization to reduce energy bills for the same amount of work.
Role of the Power
Power plays vital role in metalworking applications. There are two important things that relates to power; one is the available power on the machine and second is the utilization of the available power. If we consume abnormal power, then it may result into either higher power consumption or adverse effect on tool life as well as machine’s life. So, it is better to study the power requirements as it may have an impact on total machining costs.
Formulas to calculate power requirements
There are different formulas to calculate power requirements for different machining operations and they are directly related to the Metal Removal Rate (MRR). You can use the following formulas to calculate your power requirements for operations such as Turning, Milling and Drilling. Now a days, almost all major cutting tools manufacturers provide the calculators on their website as well as mobile applications.
